Oral health and heart health: The growing link

If you’re trying to encourage a client to offer dental insurance to their employees, consider this: The benefits of good oral health may extend all the way to the heart.

Studies show a correlation between poor oral health and cardiovascular problems. Consider the mounting evidence:

  • A study presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions found that people who brushed their teeth less than twice a day for less than two minutes had a three-fold increased risk of heart attack, heart failure or stroke.
  • A Harvard Health study found a moderate correlation between tooth loss and coronary heart disease.
  • A Health, Aging and Body Composition study found that periodontal disease was associated with increased cardiovascular disease mortality.

Researchers believe that bacteria from gum infections can travel to blood vessels, causing inflammation and damage. This inflammation can lead to blood clots, heart attacks and strokes. Oral bacteria have been found in damaged blood vessels.

Will brushing and flossing prevent a heart attack or stroke? The proof isn’t definitive, but it suggests yet another link between oral health and overall health. Other links have been found between oral health and osteoporosis, kidney disease, diabetes and even dementia.

Prevention is key

Preventing oral health problems like gum disease starts at home. Brushing for two to three minutes, at least twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste helps remove plaque from teeth, as does flossing daily.

Regular preventive checkups and cleanings can also help gum disease. Most Delta Dental plans cover two preventive visits per year at 100%. And preventing problems from occurring also avoids costly procedures down the road.

Delta Dental PPO™ enrollees with qualifying chronic conditions are eligible for SmileWay® Wellness Benefits (known as SmileWay Enhanced Benefits in Texas). These benefits offer 100% coverage each year for one periodontal scaling and root planing (deep cleaning to treat gum disease) and up to four cleanings or periodontal maintenance cleanings per year. This benefit is available as an add-on for all mid-size and large group plans with Delta Dental PPO.

What this means to employers

Healthy employees are the key to a successful workplace. Supporting oral health helps keep teams feeling their best, which makes them happier and contributes to their overall health. When employees stay healthy, they’re also less likely to miss work, leading to increased productivity and engagement. Taking care of their health is more than a smart business move — it’s a commitment to caring for team members and valuing their well-being.
