Since 1955, we have offered comprehensive, high-quality oral health care benefits to millions of enrollees and built the strongest network of dental providers in the country. The Delta Dental of California network includes affiliates Delta Dental Insurance Company; Delta Dental of Pennsylvania; Delta Dental of New York, Inc.; Delta Dental of the District of Columbia; Delta Dental of Delaware, Inc.; and Delta Dental of West Virginia, providing dental benefits to more than 31 million people across 15 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
The company and its affiliates are part of Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA), a not-for-profit national association based in Oak Brook, Illinois. Through our national network of Delta Dental companies, we offer dental coverage in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories. We offer vision coverage through DeltaVision in 15 states and the District of Columbia. Collectively, we deliver benefits to more Americans than any other dental insurance company.
Over the past century, both dental insurance and oral health have undergone significant changes. A few decades ago, most adults over 50 had dentures and very few people saw the dentist unless it was an emergency. Dental benefits didn’t exist because good oral health simply wasn’t that important. Fortunately, in 1955, a small group of dentists set out to revolutionize oral health care.
Recognizing the need to increase access to oral health care, they formed dental service organizations in California, Oregon and Washington. This led to the creation of the first nonprofit dental service company — Washington Dental Service — which was the foundation of the broader, nationwide Delta Dental network that exists today.
We provide dental benefit plans in Alabama, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
As a purpose-driven organization, Delta Dental of California has a legacy of philanthropy throughout its history. We look for areas in which we can have a large impact on health outcomes. In support of our mission to build caring, resilient communities, we work with nonprofit partners across our 15-state and Washington, D.C., enterprise to increase access to oral health care, fund oral health education and support organizations that serve vital needs in our communities. Since 2011, the Community Care Foundation has granted more than $140 million.
In 2022, the Community Care Foundation broadened its philanthropic focus by launching a multi-year program to fund community-based coalitions to address the oral health crisis among older adults in the U.S. Learn more about the work of the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation.
We are proud of our reputation for attracting and developing some of the brightest leaders in the health care industry. Strong leadership is vital to fulfilling our purpose of improving health by providing access to quality care.
Delta Dental believes everyone should have access to quality care. That's why we contract with federal, state and local agencies to underwrite and/or administer dental programs that provide much-needed services for those without group-sponsored coverage. These programs include:
